Research Interests

  • Banu Gopalan's research experience, in both computing and biological systems, provides the ideal blend for her role as an interface specialist, with a bioinformatics expertise. She helps to organize, analyze and manage vast amounts of information in the Biological and Computational sciences arena. From these reams of information and data, she creates models and culls patterns for research efforts in the proteomics, genomics and computational biology fields.

In the last 5 years she has been working in bioinformatics interfaces to maximize value convergence between computational sciences and biology. At Monsanto, she has worked on several projects like Protein structure modeling and Molecular Dynamic simulations, Docking of ligand to macromolecules, Annotation and Curation of Rice genome, Gene Validation and Bioinformatics support for functional genomics programs. She also coordinated with the information technology team and the biologists in the design of proprietary scientific databases and integration of bioinformatics tools onto the Scientific Workbench.

Prior to PNNL, She worked at University of California Davis in the Plant biology division on Metabolic profiling and engineering of Oxylipins.

She began her work career with a four-year stint in a Pharmaceutical Company, Orchid Pharma, in the area of Regulatory Affairs, where she helped in the design, initiation and coordination of new protocols and analyses (like, Impurity Profile Analysis, Stability Studies, Forced Degradation studies etc.). Besides, she assisted in preparation and submission of drug dossiers and liaison with regulatory authorities like EU-RA, US-FDA, in obtaining drug registration.
