Research Interests

  • Design and development of collaboratory/Grid/informatics software supporting scientific research and education
  • Creation of collaboratory/Grid-enabled scientific communities and informatics approaches to managing large-scale heterogeneous data
  • Analysis of the sociology, organizational behavior, and group dynamics of distributed research and learning teams with an emphasis on feedback into software research.

Current Activities and Projects

Eric Stephan has over 14 years experience in the field of data modeling and database architecture. His repertoire of experience includes:

  • Modeling, architecting, integrating and deploying distributed heterogeneous data systems.
  • Discovering innovative approaches for scientific data management.
  • Developing and administering databases.
  • Project management.

Mr. Stephan has extensive modeling experience using the entity relationship, object modeling technique (OMT), and the universal modeling language (UML) to develop concept, logical, and physical data models for scientific and engineering projects.

He developed a way to use an Apache server with a mod_dav module as a lightweight scientific data management server using the WebDAV protocol. The WebDAV protocol offered a unique way to provide scientists an open context schema to manage objects, collections and metadata in a problem-solving environment.

He also has extensive experience managing databases, including:

  • 9 years experience with relational databases (Oracle, Sybase, PostgresSQL, MySQL).
  • 3 years experience with object oriented databases (Excelon (formally ObjectDesign) ObjectStore).
  • 2 years experience with WebDAV data storage systems (Apache/mod_dav and Jakarta/Slide).

Mr. Stephan also has experience in the following programming languages and protocols:

  • 5 years experience C++
  • 14 years experience SQL
  • 5 years experience Java
  • 4 years experience with WebDAV and HTTP.
